Packet Radio AX25 re-visited

A few months ago I acquired a couple of old Kantronics KPC-9612 Plus TNCs  with the ambitious idea of setting up a Packet Radio network in my home town of Cheltenham.

With the help of Mark G0USL, our new Packet Radio stations have been up and running for a month or two and we are currently running nodes and personal mailboxes using our TNCs in Terminal mode.

My interest in Radio started during the Summer of 1981.  My then step-father was a lorry driver and had an AM CB Radio .  Inevitably when CB Radio was legalised using the FM mode, on 2nd November 1981, as a family we had a brand new CB at home, and the legendary K40 antenna.

I used CB Radio regularly for the following 10 years, then in 1991 I decided to attend the local college for the RAE course.  I passed in 1992 and was allocated the callsign,  G7MVD.  I quickly studied morse code and with the help of many people I  passed the 12 wpm Morse test and gained the callsign, G0TMP.

Besides the City & Guilds Radio Amateur Exam I also achieved awards in Electronic Servicing from the same institute after attending Stroud College full-time circa 1993, something of which I am very proud of.  However, I did not change my career path to Electronics, I went back into Engineering (mechanical).

On and off since 1999 I have been self-employed in the IT industry (web) initially running my own e-commerce store selling table-top wargames miniatures and hobby related products. Knowledge gained during a 6 year period enabled me to help numerous friends and former fellow traders set up their own websites.

In 2013 I helped my son set up a Web Development and Hosting company of which due to recent ill health I am now a former director.

Sept ’20: I am proud to announce that my son’s company will shortly complete a new website for Nevada Radio.
